“It is just as valuable to be censured by friends as it is splendid to be praised by enemies.  We desire praise from those who do not know us, but from friends we want the truth.”  –René Descartes

My Purpose:

Helping you unlock the power of discovery and emotional health. My goal is to educate and support you toward mental well-being and empowerment.

About Doug

Hello!  If you're here, you may have a problem that you can't quite put a finger on.  So why might I be able to help?

My curiosity in emotional awareness goes back decades.  After completing an undergraduate Business degree, I still didn't have a clear understanding of why, or what to do with it.  After almost a decade, I knew that something wasn't quite right.  A major life event prompted me to ask tough questions and although I didn't like the answers, the price of avoiding them was too great.

I pulled the plug on that career, and entered the Clinical Counselling program at Tyndale University.  Along the way, I was introduced to Emotional Focused Therapy and Family Systems Theory, which helped me put together some important pieces of my puzzle.

Looking back, it was necessary to embrace discomfort to develop an appreciation for the things I thought I needed to change..   I hold a deep conviction that many others are in a similar position.  If that's you, please know that there is 1) hope, 2) purpose and 3) you don't have to go through this alone.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Therapy is a clinically validated method developed by Susan Johnson and Les Greenberg in the mid-1980's, based on Attachment Theory by John Bowlby in the 1950's.  Simply put, it holds that all human beings create emotional bonds with each other, and how those play out, has a lasting impact on how we see ourselves and others.

Just as how we don't think about things like breathing, our key relationships influence us whether we're aware of them or not.  The messages we get through them are subtle and most people don't give it much thought, until they need to.  But then, where to begin?  The very idea of beginning this journey can be overwhelming, which is one reason why most people simply don't bother to try.

I strive to create an environment similarly to having a cup of coffee with a friend.  If fact, I encourage people to bring a coffee or tea into the session!

During a therapy session, you can expect a safe and confidential environment.  Since the sessions are online, make sure you're in a place where you won't be overheard or interrupted for the length of the session.

I practice active listening, grounded in evidence-based practices, to work collaboratively with you to explore solutions and promote growth.  To be sure, some sessions are challenging, but my aim is to help you feel heard, understood and supported regardless.

Will I benefit from psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is for anyone looking to delve deeper into their thoughts and feelings.  While there are no guarantees, evidence shows that psychotherapy is effective for a wide range of issues and groups of people.

Working with a psychotherapist does not make a person less capable, but rather can be a sign of wisdom and courage!  Like any journey, it helps to have someone help guide and notice things that one wouldn't normally notice on their own.
